Three ways into the Wild

Nyerere National Park can be met from the seat of an open vehicle, from the quiet of a boat on the Rufiji, or on foot in the early morning bush. Each one offers a different vantage point, a distinct pace, and its own intimacy with the wild. Come and make the most of all of them.

TWO WAYS IN ONE DAY

The Slow Selous

Our signature experience, the Slow Selous is designed to give you the full range of what this ecosystem offers in a single, unhurried day. You start in the bush, tracking, watching and reading the land from the vehicle, before settling into lunch in the shade. Then the boat arrives at the water's edge inside the park to collect you: a transition that signals a shift in pace and perspective. The afternoon on the water brings hippos, crocodiles, a chorus of kingfishers and bee-eaters, and the river's particular quality of light. The boat brings you directly back to the steps at camp.

A safari with us is different: intimate, attentive, and wild

The Nyerere National Park, part of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, is an elemental, one-of-a-kind place – vast African wilderness where, at times, you can truly feel like the only people in the world. A safari with Selous River Camp exploring this place is a departure from the ordinary: a leisurely and personal experience which is a world away from the cookie-cutter safari tours found elsewhere.

With Selous River Camp, your day is built around the bush, not a route or schedule. We plan everything with you in mind and don't want you to miss out on the magical time when the wildlife is most active, the temperature is mild, and the light is beautiful. During the hottest part of the day, when the wildlife is most scarce, you can indulge in a bush lunch and laze in the shade of a large tree, taking the time to absorb the dramatic landscape as life unfolds around you. Soaking up the atmosphere, symphony of sounds, and earthy smells of the wilderness is as much a part of this experience as exploring its winding tracks on the hunt for wildlife … and that takes time. This is safari done the way it should be: intimate, attentive, and wild.

It's not a new idea. It's just become uncommon.

"The great stillness in these landscapes that once made me restless seeps into me day by day, and with it the unreasonable feeling that I have found what I was searching for without ever having discovered what it was."

-Peter Matthiessen, Sand Rivers (1981)
