TWO WAYS IN ONE DAY

The Slow Selous

Our signature experience, the Slow Selous is designed to give you the full range of what this ecosystem offers in a single, unhurried day. You start in the bush, tracking, watching and reading the land from the vehicle, before settling into lunch in the shade. Then the boat arrives at the water's edge inside the park to collect you: a transition that signals a shift in pace and perspective. The afternoon on the water brings hippos, crocodiles, a chorus of kingfishers and bee-eaters, and the river's particular quality of light. The boat brings you directly back to the steps at camp.

  • Game Drive

    The game drive is the best way to cover ground in Nyerere, moving through open miombo woodland, seasonal sand rivers and the floodplain edge as the day unfolds. Each habitat shifts the wildlife and the light. Morning light brings predators on the move; the midday pause lets the bush settle around you over lunch; afternoons often produce the most memorable sightings of the day, as herds gather near water and the light turns gold. Your guide reads the bush as you go, narrating tracks, behaviour and the smaller details that make sense of the larger picture.

  • Night Game Drive

    The bush after sunset belongs to a different cast of characters. Nocturnal creatures become visible in the spotlight: civets, genets, bush babies, the occasional aardvark. Predators that rested through the heat of the day begin to move. The sounds change too; the landscape feels both more alive and more intimate. Best combined with another in-park activity earlier in the day to make the most of your time in the park.

  • Boat Safari

    The Rufiji and its chain of oxbow lakes, Manze, Tagalala and Siwandu, are one of the great boat-safari destinations in East Africa. From the water, you get angles on wildlife that no vehicle can offer: buffalo at the lake's edge, elephants crossing open channels, hippo pods in close proximity, enormous crocodiles basking on warm sand. The birdlife alone, fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, a dozen species of kingfisher, carmine bee-eaters in the dry season, makes a day on the water worthwhile.

  • Sunset Cruise

    The Rufiji at dusk is a particularly good place to arrive. As the light softens and the temperature drops, the river comes alive: fish eagles overhead, hippos surfacing near the banks, the day shifting into evening in real time. This shared cruise runs outside the national park (no park fees), making it an ideal first activity for guests arriving in the afternoon.

  • Dawn Cruise

    Early morning on the Rufiji has its own character: still water, cool air and the dense activity of a bird community coming awake. Kingfishers work the shallows, herons stand motionless at the water's edge, and fish eagles call from the trees above. It's a gentle, unhurried way to start a day, and because it runs outside the national park, there are no park fees. A natural fit for a departure morning, or any day when you'd rather move slowly.

  • Walking Safari

    Walking here is genuinely different from walking elsewhere. The Selous is one of very few East African national parks where guided walking is permitted, and the open miombo woodland, wide-canopied and sandy-floored with good sightlines, is structurally suited to it. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you cover a few kilometres at an unhurried pace: reading tracks, identifying plants and insects, understanding the landscape from the inside rather than passing through it. It pairs well with a full day game drive, adding a layer of intimacy that the vehicle cannot.
