Selous River Camp

On the serene banks of the Rufiji, where the waters of one of Africa's greatest rivers carves through the vast wilderness of Nyerere National Park, Selous River Camp invites you to experience safari the way it was always meant to be — slow, attentive, and alive.

This award-winning camp, set on the border of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, is where breathtaking game country and genuine authenticity meet, without compromise.

COMFORT

On the banks of one of Africa's greatest rivers.

The Rufiji River flows past our camp with a force that shapes everything here. Wildlife comes to drink, and you come to witness it all.

Beauty in simplicity

We believe in comfort without pretense. Your room is well-appointed, your meals are thoughtful, and the view is unforgettable.

See what moves through Nyerere National Park

Lions hunt at dawn. Wild dogs feed pups in their dens. Elephants move through the acacia. Our guides know where to find them and when to be silent.

ADVENTURE

WATER

The river reveals what the land keeps hidden

From our boats you see hippos, crocodiles, and birds in abundance, revealing themselves freely to anyone willing to watch.

LOCATION

THE PARK

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park stretches across more than thirty thousand square kilometers of untamed land and forms part of one of the largest protected wildlife ecosystems in the world

Our camp sits on its border, on the Rufiji River, where you can feel the pulse of the park without leaving your chair.

ROOMS

Where you rest between adventures

Each room is built to let you feel the land around you. Clay, wood, and canvas create spaces that are both shelter and window.

ACTIVITIES

How you spend your days

The park offers itself in different ways. You choose how to meet it. Early mornings, late afternoons, or from the water itself.

  • Slow Selous

A morning drive into Nyerere, a long picnic in the bush, and a boat boarded from inside the park — drifting back to camp as the afternoon settles. Land and river in a single, unhurried day. As the light softens and the animals come down to drink, you are already on the Rufiji, watching it unfold. For the guests who want to slow down and feel what the Selous truly is, this is the day we would most like them to take.

  • Game Drive

Into the park with the first light. Our guides read the land like a book. They know where the lions rest, where the elephants gather, and which birds sing only at certain hours. You explore in an open vehicle and see what few people ever see.

  • Boat Safari

There is no rushing the Rufiji. From first light to the soft hours of the afternoon, the river carries you at its own pace — past hippos surfacing in the shallows, crocs lying still on the banks, elephants making their way down to drink. Our guides know these waters. They know where to look, when to drift, and when to let the river do the storytelling.

  • Walking Safari

Some things only reveal themselves on foot. In the cool of the morning, you set out with our guides into the bush, where every track in the dust and every broken branch tells a story from the night before. Conversation falls naturally to a whisper. You begin to notice what you would otherwise pass by — the smaller life of the Selous, the place beneath the place.

  • Amazing accommodation with beautiful views

We had a fantastic experience at Selous River Camp. The views onto the River Rufiji are absolutely stunning. Our accommodation was also beautiful. The unexpected visit by an elephant to the camp, the boat safari and the amazing staff at Selous River Camp were certainly a highlight. We would like to thank the team at Selous River Camp for the unforgettable experience. We hope to be back one day!

  • Our favorite place in Tanzania

Staying at Selous River Camp was the highlight of our Tanzania journey. The camp was absolutely gorgeous, and the staff go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and safe. They have options for budget travelers as well as more luxureous options. No matter your choice, they will make you feel at home.

Expect: great food, relaxing at the pool while seeing hippo's swim by, enjoying the monkeys in the trees above you, or perhaps hear the elephants visiting at night ( there are guards to keep you safe). We are looking forward to visiting again!

  • Magic on the Rufiji

What a stunning place! So quiet, so peaceful, so special. The staff were lovely and made a real effort to look out for you, whilst the food and amenities were fantastic value for money. Our safari in Nyerere national park was a magical experience, one we won’t forget in a hurry. The sound of the laughing hippos and the colours of the beautiful sunset make the Selous on the Rufiji river a must stay.

  • Hideway on the banks of a river

We travelled directly from Europe (via Dar Es Salaam) and spent the first three nights here. It was simply wonderful. The location is very idyllic on the banks of the river. Apart from animal sounds, you can hear nothing. Drinks and food are served directly under an open roof or in front of it. The staff are super friendly and provide very personalised service. The entrance to the park is just around the corner. Fortunately, Nyerere National Park is not yet overrun with tourists, so you can observe the animals undisturbed.

  • We made unforgettable memories!

Selous arranged everything for us, the flight from Zanzi to Selous, the safari's and the car trip back to Dar es Salaam airport. The accomodation (tent riverview with toilet and shower) was perfect. And the food was very nice. The location at the river and at the entrance of the national park is perfect. When you wake up, the animals are already around you. But the biggest shout out goes to the staff. They are so friendly and helpfull. Thank you for making us feel very welcome at Selous River Camp!
