ravelling to the Selous

HOW TO GET THERE

By Car:
From Dar es Salaam: 235km, via Kibiti and Mloka - Tarmac to Kibiti, Rough Dirt Roads from there on. Driving time: 4-6 hours. Not advised without a 4WD vehicle.

Many Tour Operators run tours to the Selous, but if you prefer to be independent, we recommend a hire-car.

Tour Operators we recommend (and why):
Hippo Tours - Absolute experts on the Selous - probably because they've been specialising in Southern Circuit for years! Outstanding vehicles, great customer care and knowledgeable guides make for a high quality safari.

By Plane:
Daily scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam/Zanzibar to Mtemere Airstrip - only a short distance from Selous River Camp. We can arrange free pick up. For further details and up to date flight schedules visit either the Coastal Aviation Safari Air Link or Zanair websites.

By Bus:
For intrepid adventurers only! Ideal for backpackers.
By far the cheapest and (most uncomfortable!) option, Akida bus company runs down from Dar es Salaam every day except Thursday (and therefore no bus back to Dar every friday). Leaving at around 4-5am from Temeke-Sudani area of Dar es Salaam to Mloka village (3kms from camp) the bus ride can take anything from 8 hours onwards. Please let us know if you intend on getting to us by bus so that we can come and collect you from Mloka.

CLIMATE
- Tanzania’s climate is predominantly tropical. There is a long dry season from June to October and two separate rainy seasons; the long, heavy one from Mid-March to late May and the short rains from November to December. For the whole country, the hottest months are from October to February. The coolest months are June to August when the nights and early mornings can be cold. We recommend June to October as the most pleasant time to visit the Selous. The cool climate and dry grass make for a better Safari.
